Abetalk and 501(c)(3) status?

Do you think we should attempt to get 501(c)(3) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/501(c)) status for abetalk? I worry about accepting donations and advertising funds to pay for servers and such as this could be a tax problem in the future.

Would anyone have experience or knowledge about this?

Soon we will need to upgrade to servers that cost $50 a month. This means we would have to flow $600 a year through our paypal account. Would that still be considered a gift?
