Last few days have been insaaane. We never had weather this hot. Already three days of weather hanging around 35°C, ridiculously humid. So tight it feels like there's no air to breath. Weather Network reports "it feels like 45°C". Even at night, temperature hanging around 29°C.

At my place we didn't have air conditioning. I couldn't sleep at night. I tried one night, and woke up with an intense headache, almost vomiting. So instead of sleeping I've been trying to entertain myself with TV shows and movies. I feel insomnia creeping in...

Today I searched craigslist (well actually, the popular Canadian version is called Kijiji) and found an air conditioner. Just picked it up. Hopefully we'll have it set up tonight so I can finally rest in peace.

I got a remarkable deal on it. New air conditioners start at $87 for a tiny 5000BTU, which is like for one bedroom. 6500BTU are $150, 8000BTU are $200 and up. I got an 8000BTU, big enough for most of our house. It was purchased new two years ago, but only used one season. I paid $75.00 for it - that's like 67.5% savings compared to the buying it new at the store. It even has a remote control. I love love love classifieds.

Yeah, I tried to make this point the other night and got lost in my own longwindedness. How unusual for me.

The pertinent line: I write all this now because it's raining. In July. In Townsville.Unusual is not the word. This is the Dry, dammit!

Do you suppose the end is nigh?

I know, Derek, I know. Spent 16 years there, until I learnt better. Jesus. I was there job-hunting late May and after three weeks of watching the drizzle run down the windows and the dirty white sky outside, it was either top myself or fly north again.

Are you working? Are you doing okay? Is it worth it?

Yes, I know Lygon Street, Brunswick Street, the Queen Vic market and Southbank and your galleries and what-not, you culture vultures, while we're all running around in sarongs n thongs gettin sarcomas. Yes I feel like a hick whenever I visit. I love Phillip Island and Wilson's Prom, Toorongo Falls and Walhalla. But honestly...

lol, yes it's not the best this time of year. No work at the moment, just gathering data. I'm doing good, location's not really that important to me at the moment. I do like it here but i am a big fan of warm weather and may venture up North one day. You staying up there for the time being?

As long as I possibly can, mate... and a lot depends on where an income might be. Holy fuck, I've been considering a FIFO to Mt Isa. I think that's about as desperate as one can get.

Let me know if you're visiting.

lol I have no idea what you guys are talking about, never been to any of those places... but I love the sharing that goes on!

Here, we've been having some unusual temperatures as well. July is the middle of our winter, and last Sunday we had like 20°! It was lovely, I love the sun and I love opening all the windows of my house to get some fresh air! That morning I had the house to myself, and I cleaned it all! Sometimes the nice temperatures are really motivating... I like that... =) Then my friends came over and the house was looking so nice... Now it's cold again, like it's supposed to be in winter... And I bought more winter pants, and a summer shirt I saw on sale... love getting new clothes before the season starts, then when it does, I have this new piece of clothing to wear! ^^

I have no idea what you guys are talking about, never been to any of those places... Elementary, my dear butterfly. We are discussing a geographical phenomenon known as latitude. I am at 19°S and Derek rates a somewhat higher number, ie I'm in the tropics and he isn't.

Melbourne's a big city. It considers itself very arty and sophisticated, lots of good places to eat, theatres, nightclubs, you name it they got it. But the most ardent Melbournite couldn't look you in the face and say they enjoy a good climate. Not at any time of year. The jokes are
- Melbourne doesn't have climate. It has samples.
- If you don't like the weather in Melbourne, wait five minutes.
- Four seasons in one day.
- If you go out in Melbourne, wear a bikini under a thick coat.

In comparison Townsville is very old-fashioned. Hasn't got much going for it unless you like blue sky, palm trees, fabulous beaches, amazing wildlife, free-flowing traffic, heat, sunshine, casual dress, laid-back lifestyle.

July is the middle of our winter, Yeah, I think I worked out you're about the same latitude as I am and last Sunday we had like 20°! but we do better than that. During the daytime now you'll still roast in more than shorts and Tshirts. Early morning and evenings you might need a light jacket. I'm still swimming every day.

I bought more winter pants, and a summer shirt I saw on sale... love getting new clothes before the season starts, then when it does, I have this new piece of clothing to wear! I enjoy your delight in clothes.

Now I get it Leah! lol very funny, wait five minutes? I've never been to a place like that before... wait, I've been to Brazil, and it can rain at anytime and then the sunshine will come back grinning at you.

I KNEW IT!!! I found it! (http://abetalk.com/showthread.php?p=56794&highlight=latitude#post56794) :joylick::joylick::joylick: we have been aligned all along Leah, yes we have! :hug:And you never saw this, did you? :facelol:

wear a bikini under a thick coat :facelol: hot! well it does sound like an interesting place to visit!

and boy Leah, you seem to be having a blast... you know, despite the fact...... swim everyday? that's like a vacation!

swim everyday? that's like a vacation! You're so right. PLUS, the lady of the house is a fabulous cook, so good that I now find myself incapable of even boiling an egg; and the man of the house is an all-round Mr Fix-It, from carpentry to technological support. I wash dishes, wipe surfaces and occasionally sweep floors.

The other afternoon, I think Monday, was so glorious I lay on a towel beside the pool with a borrowed book, fags and glass of wine. In no time Mr Fix-It had produced a small plastic-backed mattress to put under my towel.

Most days I have appointments around the place, forms to fill in or some other crap to do, but that afternoon I really did feel I was at a swank resort. Oh, the beach is still in Bertie distance, too, should I feel so inclined.

Yeah, I want my own front door and to be able to unpack my boxes, but it doesn't feel like emergency...

we have been aligned all along Leah, yes we have! What are you like at walking on water? We could each set out along the Tropic of Capricorn and meet up on some South Pacific island.
