I'm not sure if you've heard about this. There's a high school in Philadelphia with 2,300 students that supplies each with an Apple laptop. The laptops are installed with software that takes photos on the built-in webcam and sends them back to school servers.
Recently, one of these laptops took a photo of a student in his home. A school supervisor thought the boy was using and selling pills, so they confronted him and his parents about the issue, using one of the photos as evidence. It turns out, the boy was eating Mike & Ike's candy (http://images.google.ca/images?q=mike%20and%20ike%27s&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi). And in confronting the student, the school admitted to invading the boy's privacy and ignoring wiretapping laws.
The student and his parents are now suing the district with a class-action lawsuit. The school is trying to cover up their tracks by claiming they only take photos in an effort to recover a stolen laptop. Other students are reporting that they noticed the green webcam light comes on by itself, even when they were not using the webcam. When they reported this to the school technician, they were told "it's just a glitch".
Spooky all around. But from the looks of it, this school district is going to be coughing up some serious money.
