View Full Version : A new job search - moving from upstream to downstream

I have been at my present job for about three and a half years now. I was one of the happiest people on the face of the earth when I found out I had gotten the position and for the first two and a half years I worked here, I thought I would be happy to work here until I croaked.
However, for several different reasons (not the least of which is the $100 weekly I now spend in gas and tolls to commute)I have been becoming increasingly dissatisfied and wanting to make a change. But just contemplating the idea of job searching, resume-building, interviewing, etc was extremely upstream for me. Thinking about the entire process was enough to make me puke.
Finally, I got out a piece of paper and wrote down everything I wanted in my dream job including fun and challenging work, three weeks vacation to start, a commute of less than 15 minutes and more. After I finished my list, I placed it in my "creation box" and said "whatever is contained in this box is." That was several months ago and since then I have taken no action steps to move this along.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere and situation where I work has steadily deteriated. I am in the sales department with about 80 other people. Because company sales have taken a dramatic negative turn since January, we are all being examined under a microscope with every call, email, and action being monitored. Two long-term veterans, one of 17 years and the other of 22 years, were just fired for poor sales performance. Even though I was the top sales performer percentage-wise for the month of May, I was reduced to tears in my boss's office yesterday with the implied threat that if I don't increase my revenue I may not be around much longer either.
Today when I got home, I felt lower than whale poop. I realized that even though searching for a new job seemed to be upstream for me, staying at this one is even more upstream. I closed my eyes and tried to meditate for a few minutes, while asking my spiritual guide for guidance.
I then went on careerbuilder and within 30 minutes found a job opening that is thrilling to me! I went on the company website and the more I read, the more excited I became. I have just spent the last three and a half hours re-writing my resume and cover letter and submitted it to the company. I then took a peek at the "dream job requirements" I had written months ago and found that most, if not all, of my desires are offered by this position! How wonderful is that???
Tomorrow when I go into work, I will be walking lighter and feeling happier than I have in months. Technically, nothing has changed - I don't have the new job yet and am still working at the old one. But my vibration has changed big-time! And if I keep myself lined up with my new desires, the job must manifest :)

Last year I manifested a job using the Abraham processes (using the vision board and identifying what I wanted as I wrote about it with clear intent), and I'm now at the job. It's exactly what I asked for since I was very clear on what I wanted. So I created it before I got here, and I love it.
I manifested the right salary and coworkers.
I manifested the right commute to work.
I manifested the right location.
I manifested the right coworkers to have lunch with.
I manifested monthly socials too, since my last job didn't have that.
I can say it's fun to manifest stuff you want. It's even better when it comes. Yeah!
Just make sure you manifest a FUN JOB!!! :D life is supposed to be FUN!!

Pamela, your current job sounds like Hell. I think it's telling you to quit.
My brother had been expecting a promotion to regional sales manager, and to receive his own office to manage. After 16 months of promises and waiting, his company failed to provide it to him -- and the situation got less hopeful and more depressing for him each day. Finally, he quit, and within 2-3 weeks he was recruited by an even better company, with better salary and people, who gave him the position he was looking for immediately. He didn't even have to go looking for it, it found him.

Thanks Steve and 11:11 for your comments.
You have a point, Steve, about the social aspect of a job. One thing I love about my current job is my co-workers. We have several happy-hours throughout the year, but because I live so far away, I don't make many of them. For the ones I do attend, my husband Raymond will either drive me into work in the morning and then pick me up and go to happy hour with me, or I will drive myself into work and he will pick me up, we go to happy hour and then home together, and then the next morning he has to drive me back to work for me to get my car. Of course all of this is because I love my cocktails and don't want to drink and drive rofl
And because most of my co-workers live within a few minutes of the office, I get invited to a lot of parties and stuff, but usually have to decline.
Chances are that when I do change jobs, I will lose contact with my current friends from where I work now. Everyone always has good intentions to stay in touch, but it usually does not work out that way. However, I make friend very easily and I am sure I will have new people to hang out with and go to happy hour.
11:11, my original intent was for my new job to find me. But last nite I finally felt compelled to look on careerbuilder to see what was out there. And who knows?? This new prospect may not be the right thing for me and my dream job will fall into my lap after all. I really don't care about the "how", I just want to stay focused on the end result

Exactly, just keep focus on the end result. My brother had started looking for a new placement on the internet job postings, sent out some resumes, talked to some of the companies. In the end, he got his new placement directly, and it wasn't as a result of all the "searching".
You said early that "just contemplating the idea of job searching, resume-building, interviewing, etc was extremely upstream for me. Thinking about the entire process was enough to make me puke." Which makes sense, right? When you are focused on "looking for a job", you are focused on the lack.

WOO HOO!!! Wait to you hear this...
This morning I looked into my "bulk mail" box on my computer and there was an email from the employment manager at the company I applied! She said she called my home phone yesterday but had trouble leaving a message (not sure what is up with that) and that she will like me to call her today to discuss the position more!
This is so exciting!
I will let yall know what happens

I spoke with the HR Mgr today for about 15 minutes. She was pre-interviewing me on the phone. Anyway, she must have liked what she heard because she asked me to come in for a face-to-face interview tomorrow afternoon at 3:30!!

 Hi Pam, I am very excited about how things will turn out for you. I am sure it's gonna be great!
I'd like to tell you that a very similar thing happened to me a month ago. I was so burned out with my job and completely dissatisfied with my pay. Everything was turning upstream in my point of view as my boss is practically begging me to stay. But I decided to leave the company. It's the best thing I've done.
I just let go. ^^
I am now happy about how things are.
I manifested cool employers.
I manifested a cool job for myself.
All is well. :D
Please keep us updated. We'd love to hear more from you.

OK, so here is what happened at the interview yesterday.
I was feeling a little bit nervous while in the car on the way so I did a little bit of tapping and talked to my inner being to soothe myself a bit. I got to the interview a half hour early so I sat in the car and composed some questions to ask about the position. By the time I walked in I was feeling pretty relaxed.
The HR manager and I seemed to hit it off great and I really like her. The more she told me about the company and their environment, the more excited I got.
Now wait until you hear this part - she said a couple of year agos the company had some sort of big seminar called "Fish and Fun" or something like that. I am not sure of the name but I know "fish" and "fun" was in the title. The purpose of the seminar was to demonstrate how having a fun workplace is good for everyone, especially the bottom line. Since that seminar, the company managers and employees actively look for ways to have more fun while working!! One of my job requirments I had listed in my vision box was "My work is so much fun, it does not seem like work." How freaking awesome is that???!!!
I next met with the sales manager and as it turned out, not only is he familiar with my present company, but he said he always likes to interview people who come from there. He said he knows they are used to working very hard and the very fact that I was still there after three and a half years, was testiment enough as to my sales abilities :)
I then met with the HR manager again who gave me a packet of info with job benefits, etc. She said she will be in touch by Wednesday of next week at the latest. She also said that sometimes they will want someone to come in for a second interview and sometimes they will hire from just a first interview.
At any rate, I feel that this is absolutely the job that has been in my VE. I am so happy and thrilled and am happily expecting the offer to me made to me next week
Thanks everyone for your encouraging comments

Latest update ~ the new company called my references and I guess they panned out well because they want me to return for a second interview with the Vice President! Woo hoo!!!
The interview is next Wednesday, June 18. Because I was not able to take time off from work (I have a deadline the following day) the VP said he can meet with me at 5pm. How accomodating is that?

WOO HOO!!!! I GOT THE JOB!!!!!!
I had my interview with the VP tonite at 5pm. Everything went exceedingly well. I had brought in a list of questions to ask and on the list I had the question "Do you think I will be a good fit for this position?" This is a great closing question to ask if you are interviewing for a sales position. Before I could even ask the question, the VP said to me "Your background makes you a perfect fit for this job."
How wild is that?
The ease with which the scenario of events played out blows my mind. From the moment I lined up with my decision to find another job, everything almost fell into my lap. This was the only position I applied for and the only place I sent a resume. From the nite I emailed my resume until my final interview tonite, only 15 days transpired. I will be giving my two weeks notice tomorrow and will start in July.
I will be commuting 15 minutes to work (instead of an hour and 15 minutes), I get 3 weeks vacation to start, my health benefits for Raymond and me will cost less, I can dress casually for work, and I will be making more money. Life is fucking good

Pamela,
I just discovered this thread, and reading it was like a cliffhanger!!! But I just KNEW by the way you were managing your thoughts and emotions that this was going to unfold in a very, very, favorable way for you!!!! :woohoo:
I had a similar experience 8 years ago. Decided that the job I used to adore was no longer fun, no longer stimulating, yadda, yadda, and up and quit it a couple years short of the magical "retirement" requirement. I just did not want to do it any more, and meanwhile the U was showing me something that DID attract me....
As I felt a calling toward what I DID want to do, suddenly all the right moves just came by inspired action........
I managed to get the "years" for retirement via hundreds of days of unused sick leave time, and I just eased on in to new part-time job that I really love with colleagues to die for, a travel distance of only 6 miles on suburban roads, and now I get the retirement $$$$ PLUS a decent add-on salary with the new job. All that worrying I did about money seems utterly amusing now. I am a money magnet!
I can up and leave and go on vacation any time I want to for as long as I want to (as long as I get someone to cover for me), and I have all kinds of built-in vacation time.
People from the old job who see me are just amazed at how "good" I look!!!! No stress, no negativity. It is just enough to keep me stimulated, but not so much that it rules my life. Best of both worlds....
Well, I did not intend to babble about myself, but I realized that while I feel your thrill, I am still feeling my own, and while I offer congratulations to you, I am also honoring myself for having experienced a change just like you have.
Here's to us both!!!!
